It has been a very busy
academic year at OAN. Dr. Markarian has concluded two
visits to Mainland China in July and September of 2004
where he was a guest of the Chinese government and Chinese
Orthopedic Society. He lectured on the advanced arthroscopic
surgical techniques he performs on the shoulder. The Chinese
lectures started in the Hebei Province capital of Shijiazhouang
at the third hospital of Hebei Province a famous orthopedic
hospital and concluded at the Pingle Orthopedic Hospital
in Shenzhen, China. He also participated in walk rounds
and was a guest professor for patient clinical rounds
at both centers. The visit was a great success and at
both medical centers interest has evolved in developing
an exchange fellowship program where Chinese orthopedic
surgeons would visit and observe Dr. Markarian’s
clinical practice in Naperville, Illinois. This is being
accomplished through a Chinese/American educational foundation.
Future lectures in China are forthcoming.
On the home front, here in Chicago, Dr. Markarian lectured
and instructed a group of 30 US orthopedic surgeons at
the Orthopedic Learning Center in Rosemont, Illinois on
October 10, 2004. The program was sponsored by Opus and
it focused on the use of the Opus anchor for arthroscopic
rotator cuff repairs. Also, Dr. Markarian has been involved
in a shoulder course for the rehab professional, physical
therapist and athletic trainers. The first course was
on October 16th and 17th, 2004 at The Center for Surgery
in Naperville, Illinois and the second course is scheduled
for November 20, 2004. These courses are for CME credits
and will be available quarterly.
